The commissioning of the 10-storey, 1664-capacity bed hostel at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) on Tuesday 14th March 2023, was a significant event in the educational history of Ghana.
As the representative of the President, the Education Minister and the MP for Bosomtwe Constituency, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum had the privilege of commissioning the hostel, which was named after the late Nii Amon Kotei, the eminent designer of the nation's Coat of Arms.
The hostel is a timely intervention, considering the increase in the Gross Tertiary Enrollment Ratio (GTER) due to the implementation of the Free SHS policy by H.E Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo. The policy has produced a lot of graduates from Senior High Schools who will end up in tertiary institutions, and this has led to a high demand for student accommodation.
The Nii Amon Kotei Hostel will provide much-needed accommodation for the students of UPSA, and it is a step in the right direction towards meeting the accommodation needs of tertiary students in Ghana.
The hostel is a 10-storey complex with a capacity of 1,664 beds, and it is equipped with ultra-modern facilities such as study rooms, Junior Common Rooms (JCR), a recreational area, a laundry area, TV rooms, CCTV cameras, an elevator, Automated Teller Machine (ATM), just to mention a few.
These facilities will not only provide accommodation for the students but also create a conducive environment for learning and personal development. The hostel will serve as a home away from home for the students, and it will provide them with a sense of belonging, security, and comfort.
Dr Koryoe Anim-Wright (Registrar, UPSA)
This step is worthy of commendation and worthy of emulation by all. It is an indication of the commitment and dedication of the leadership of UPSA towards the provision of quality education and the welfare of its students.
The Nii Amon Kotei Hostel is a testament to the fact that with visionary leadership and innovative thinking, we can achieve great things in the education sector.
As the Education Minister, "I am committed to supporting initiatives that will improve the quality of education in Ghana and enhance the welfare of students. I congratulate the management of UPSA for this laudable achievement, and I urge other tertiary institutions to emulate this example and invest in the welfare of their students." The Education Minister has said
In conclusion, the commissioning of the Nii Amon Kotei Hostel is a milestone achievement that will go a long way in addressing the accommodation needs of tertiary students in Ghana.
SKO BUREAU Team would like to applaud the Vice Chancellor and the leadership of UPSA for internally generating funds to finance the beautiful edifice.
