Story by: Samuel K. Owusu
Exactly a year ago today, on April 25, 2022, the 64th Student Representative Council (SRC) administration of the University of Ghana was inaugurated. The administration was headed by Mr Prince Asumadu as the SRC President, and Mr Wisdom Ndukwe as the Vice President.
The swearing-in was conducted via Zoom and was overseen by the then SRC Chief Justice, His Lordship JSC Kwabena Addae Marfo.
This event marked the culmination of a long and hard-fought journey for Mr Prince Asumadu, who had to overcome numerous legal hurdles to assume his rightful position as the President of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council.
The journey to the swearing-in ceremony was a tough one for Mr Asumadu, who was declared the winner of the 2021 UGSRC run-election with 7,647 votes, which is equivalent to 51.6% of the valid votes defeating his closest contender, Mr Samuel Ofosu (Nana B's) who had 7,156 Votes (48.3%).
Mr Asumadu and his team had to fight for their destiny and endured a rigorous legal battle that lasted for three months before he could finally be sworn into office. He appeared before the Accra High Court on eight (8) different occasions and one (1) time in the Supreme Court of Ghana, accompanied by Mr Aikins Opoku, Mr Samuel Kwame Owusu, and his lawyer Andrews Nii Agyei Khartey (Esq) and Co.
On March 10, 2022, the Accra High Court ruled in favour of Mr Asumadu and ordered the University of Ghana to swear him in within 14 days, but the matter was taken up again. However, on April 5, 2022, the Supreme Court of Ghana struck out the application by the University of Ghana to set aside the Accra High Court ruling. Finally, on April 7, 2022, the five-member panel of the UGSRC Judicial Board, unanimously dismissed Mr Samuel Ofosu's election petition paving the way for the April 25, 2022 swearing-in

It is also essential to commend the efforts of the legal team led by Andrew Nii Agyei Khartey (Esq), who fought tirelessly to ensure that justice was served. Their hard work and dedication to the cause were commendable, and they played a significant role in ensuring that Mr Asumadu was finally sworn in as the SRC President.
