Story by: Samuel K. Owusu

On Tuesday, March 30th, 2023, the University of Ghana's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, inaugurated a 13-member UG Strategic Planning Committee, which is tasked with developing a new Strategic Plan for the University that will span from 2024 to 2029.

This move comes as the current 10-year strategic plan (2014-2024) is approaching its end, and it is essential to review what has been accomplished so far, identify lessons learned, and establish new goals and objectives to guide the University in the coming years.

The Vice-Chancellor, in her speech, highlighted the importance of the new strategic plan's development and how it would shape the future of the University. She emphasized that the new strategic plan should provide a futuristic framework that guides the University's activities and aspirations while taking cognizance of lessons learned from the existing plan. She also called on the committee to incorporate stakeholder perspectives to ensure that the plan reflects the diverse needs of the University community. The Vice-Chancellor's six strategic objectives were presented as a guide for the committee's work.

The six strategic objectives outlined by the Vice-Chancellor include:

  • Enhancing teaching and learning
  • Promoting research and innovation
  •  Increasing access to higher education
  • Improving the quality of student life
  • Building strong and sustainable partnerships
  • Enhancing the University's institutional image and reputation

The committee was urged to keep these objectives in mind as they develop the new strategic plan

The Chairman of the new Strategic Planning Committee, Prof. Eric Danquah, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for entrusting the Committee with the responsibility of developing the University's new 5-year strategic plan. He assured the Vice-Chancellor that the Committee would do their best to produce a comprehensive strategic plan that sums up the University's aspirations and priorities and guides the decisions, actions, and choices of all who will be impacted by it

The committee members are drawn from various academic and administrative units of the University and are expected to bring their diverse perspectives and experiences to bear in developing the new strategic plan. The committee's mandate includes conducting a situational analysis of the University's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT), identifying key performance indicators (KPIs) for measuring progress and establishing a roadmap for the implementation of the plan

To achieve these objectives, the committee will have to engage in a consultative and collaborative process that involves all stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners. The committee will also have to use a data-driven approach to develop the new strategic plan and ensure that it aligns with the University's mission, vision, and values.

The new strategic plan will provide a roadmap for the University's growth and development in the next five years. It will serve as a guide for decision-making, resource allocation, and priority-setting. It will also provide a basis for monitoring and evaluating the University's performance and impact on society. As such, it is a critical document that will shape the future of the University of Ghana

The University of Ghana is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa, with a history of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. It has produced many outstanding alumni who have made significant contributions to national and international development. The University's 75th anniversary, which will be celebrated in July 2023, provides an opportunity to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

The new strategic plan will be an essential part of the University's 75th-anniversary celebrations, as it sets the tone for the University's growth and development in the next five years. It will demonstrate the University's commitment to excellence, innovation, and impact and provide a basis for measuring progress towards its goals and objectives

In conclusion, the inauguration of the UG Strategic Planning Committee by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, is a critical step towards the development of a comprehensive strategic plan that will guide the University's activities and aspirations for the next five years.

With the Committee's mandate to draw inspiration from the Vice-Chancellor's 6 key strategic objectives, incorporate stakeholder perspectives and provide a futuristic framework, the new strategic plan promises to be a product of thorough and inclusive analysis that will serve as a roadmap for the University's growth and development.

It is hoped that the Committee will take full advantage of this opportunity to develop a plan that reflects the University's aspirations and priorities, while also guiding the decisions, actions, and choices of all those who will be impacted by it
