Countdown To Ghana's 2024 General Election: NDC Primaries Set To Elect Flagbearer And Parliamentary Candidates On May 13, 2023

On Saturday, 13th May 2023, the NDC will hold its presidential and parliamentary primaries to elect a flagbearer and parliamentary candidates for the 2024 General Election in Ghana. This process is an essential step towards choosing the individuals who will lead the party in the upcoming elections, and the stakes are high for all the candidates involved

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is one of the two major political parties in Ghana, alongside the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The party was founded in 1992 following Ghana's return to democratic rule after several years of military dictatorship. The founder was the late Jerry John Rawlings, who was the Head of State from 1981 to 1993 and the president of the Republic of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. The NDC has since then been a formidable political force in Ghana, winning several elections and producing three Presidents since its inception.

Three candidates will be vying for the position of the NDC's flagbearer, namely former President, John Dramani Mahama, former Minister of Finance, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, and the former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Kojo Bonsu. The fourth candidate, Ernest Kwaku Kobeah, withdrew from the race before the ballot was done.

John Mahama, who served as President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017, is a seasoned politician and a prominent figure within the NDC. He is seeking a second term as President after losing the 2020 election to the incumbent President, Nana Akufo-Addo

Dr Kwabena Duffuor, a former Minister of Finance, is another strong contender for the NDC flagbearer position. He has a wealth of experience in public service, having served as Governor of the Bank of Ghana and as Minister of Finance in two different administrations

Mr Kojo Bonsu, the former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, is a relative newcomer to politics. However, he has already made a name for himself within the NDC, and his inclusion in the race has added an interesting dynamic to the contest

The order in which the candidates appear on the ballot can often have an impact on the outcome of an election, and in this case, John Mahama has picked the number one slot, with Kojo Bonsu and Kwabena Duffuor picking the second and third slots, respectively. The NDC primaries will be closely watched by Ghanaians and the international community, as the outcome will have a significant impact on the country's political landscape and the upcoming elections.
