Education is perceived as one of the effective means through which the development of a country is centred on. According to Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon or tool which you can use to change the world". It is therefore not in dispute that, education play a crucial role in the development of a country.

University of Ghana, Legon has over the years been ranked as the best University in Ghana and even beyond. These academic achievements have not been attained on a silver platter. Different factors come together to make these achievements possible of which availability of telecommunication network is one. Choosing the University of Ghana means one has chosen comfort for a peaceful and conducive environment and a stable mind to study.
Mr Samuel Ackom (2022 SRC Presidential Candidate)

The advent of COVID-19 and the impact it has brought on humanity and the educational system globally is unprecedented. One of the effects is online teaching and learning in higher education. Virtual learning has become increasingly common and there is no doubt online education is here to stay. To be able to achieve this, one must have a stable and strong telecommunication network to be able to compete with the rest of the world

Telecommunications makes it feasible to connect students and teachers in national and international exchanges. These links enable students from varied backgrounds to construct cultural bridges by investigating common issues from different perspectives.

Students throughout the world can communicate daily about lifestyles, politics, careers, etc. Telecommunications inspires students and teachers by making learning exciting and relevant. Students generally find it motivating to correspond through telecommunications with peers and experts who would be inaccessible through other means.

Mr Samuel Ackom, a Presidential candidate for the 2022 SRC General Elections and one other concerned student of the University of Ghana have come to the realisation of the recent poor telecommunication networks on campus. Hence, the duo in a letter dated 8th February, 2023, have written to the Dean of Students Affairs to help curb the situation

The petitioners have expressed much dissatisfaction and disappointment of frequent interruptions of internet connectivity on campus, poor calls signals making it difficult for students to access online resources, complete assignments, and participate in online lectures. They further stated that the unstable network has affected the mental well-being of the students. Hence, students are not motivated to continue their studies

Poor telecommunication networks can have several negative effects on individuals and society as a whole. Some of these effects are, decreased productivity, reduced competitiveness, disconnected from the rest of the world, and inadequate access to information and education,

Overall, poor telecommunication networks can have significant consequences for individuals, communities, and society as a whole, and efforts need to be made to improve the quality of communication infrastructure on University of Ghana campuses. By so doing this, the University will be able to compete with the rest of the Universities around the world
