Dear Students, Staff and Faculty,

It is international women’s day once again, and I take the opportunity to wish all our women a happy international women’s day. This year’s theme is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.

According to the United Nations, women make up only 22 per cent of artificial intelligence (IA) workers globally. In Africa, it is estimated that women are 28 per cent of the continent’s tech professionals, and 19 per cent of women use the internet.

At the University of Ghana, even though women currently constitute 50.15 per cent of our overall student population (graduate and undergraduate), Information Technology (IT), with 20 per cent women participation in our programme with the least female participation. We have some distance to travel, and it is a work in progress.

The slogan for this year’s celebration is #EmbraceEquity.

Our quest to have women participate fully in the technological advancement that is characteristic of the twenty-first century has to be intentional and sustained.

Equity recognises that people start from different places, and we have to support them from their peculiar starting points. Embracing equity is seeking inclusion, supporting the disadvantaged, and sharing passion. It’s a collective effort.

Let us call out gender stereotyping, bias and inequalities. Let us embrace equity as we strive for equality, a day at a time, a step at a time, a programme at a time.

#EmbraceEquity  #IWD2023.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Best regards,
