Story by: Samuel K. Owusu

On April 15, 2023, The Vice President of Ghana, H.E. Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, addressed a gathering of students, academics, and the business community at Harvard University during the African Development Conference at the Harvard Law School as the guest speaker. His address was a call to action for Africa to reimagine its growth on its own terms.

He emphasized the transformative power of technology in achieving this goal, and highlighted the importance of solving basic problems such as lack of unique identity for our population, functioning property address systems, financial inclusion, payment systems, efficient public service delivery, etc., which underpin economic activities in Africa.

Dr Bawumia pointed out that for many years after independence, African countries have been trying to transform their economies without adequate data and transparent systems. This has made it difficult for them to participate in the fourth Industrial Revolution.

He noted that the greatest bane to the development of Africa is its inability to solve these basic problems. He emphasized that without data and systems, African countries cannot participate in the fourth Industrial Revolution. Dr Bawumia's address highlighted the need for Africa to break free from the shackles of an impossibility mindset and embrace the mindset of possibility in order to realize its full potential.

The challenge now is for African governments and the private sector to take up this call and invest in technology, data, and transparent systems to drive economic growth and development. It is time for African countries to take ownership of their own growth and development by investing in their people, creating a conducive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, and promoting collaboration among African countries.

As Dr Bawumia emphasized, Africa can do what advanced countries have done and more. With the right mindset, policies, and investments, Africa can unlock its full potential and achieve sustainable growth and development on its own terms.

In conclusion, Dr Bawumia's address was a reminder that Africa has the potential to drive its own growth and development. It is time for African countries to take ownership of their own destiny and invest in technology, data, and transparent systems to unlock their full potential. Only then can Africa truly reimagine its growth on its own terms and become a force to be reckoned with in the global economy.
