It has been four years now since the famous among all the diaspora halls, the Alexander Adum Kwapong Hall, had an election. The residents of the hall have been disenfranchised since 2019 because of long-standing issues creating disequilibrium in the hall.
On February 28th, 2023, the UGSRC Electoral Commissioner, Mr Daniel Kwasi Dzrekey, declared Mr Samuel Ackom the winner in the 2023 Kwapong Junior Common Room (JCR) Election with 750 votes which is equivalent to (72.7% ) of the valid votes cast as against Nana Yaa Gyamfi's 273 votes (26.5%)
Mr Samuel Ackom (JCR President-Elect, Kwapong Hall)
Below are the Provisional Results of the 2023 Alexander Adum Kwapong Hall JCR Elections
It must be noted that Mr Samuel Ackom contested the 2022 UGSRC Presidential Election. At the end of the first round, he managed to take the election into Run-Off with Mr Boakye Gyasi Martin who eventually won the Run-Off Election to become the SRC President
It must be recalled that, in 2021, Mr Caleb Elorm Kadu, a third-year student of the University of Ghana, took legal action against three senior officials of the institution, namely the Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Student Affairs, and a Senior Tutor at Alexander Kwapong Hall. In addition, the Junior Common Room (JCR) President and Electoral Commissioner of the Kwapong Hall were also named in the lawsuit.
Mr Caleb Elorm Kadu
Kadu, who resides in the Hall, was disqualified together with his running mate, Mr Samuel Ackom from the 2021 JCR Presidential race and is dissatisfied with the decision.
He claims that he was not given a fair hearing per Article 23 of the 1992 Constitution and the principle of natural justice known as audi alteram partem, after receiving a disqualification letter from the Dean of Student Affairs on June 18, 2021. Kadu asserts that he had previously been cleared to run for the presidency by the Dean of Students. Below are the writ of summons by the Accra High Court
The UGSRC Electoral Commissioner and his deputies, together with the Candidate's Polling AgentsLooking at the struggles of Mr Samuel Ackom, the ups and downs, the disappointments and discouragements, the evil plans against him, and above all, being able to come out victorious, I can confidently say that, the gentleman is refined and ready to serve the residents of Kwapong
The Electoral Commission has done a good job that needs to be commended and applauded. Thanks be to all the stakeholders who made sure that the Kwapong JCR Elections came into reality.
