NO REDUCTION: TAXI FARES STILL REMAIN GH¢10.00 ON LEGON CAMPUS: DID THE SRC PRO LIE ?

Source: Samuel K. Owusu

It must be recalled that, On Monday, 19th December 2022, Ghana Private Roadmap and Transport Union (GPRTU) and Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), released a joint publication of a reduction of transport fares by 15.3%

The move, according to the union was necessitated by the recent downward trend of petroleum products at the various fuel pumps, 26th October, 2022

Surprisingly, taxi drivers on Legon campus have never adhered to the release by their mother associations (GPRTU and GRTCC) and have been continuously profiteering students even though there has been a reduction in fuel prices. Some drivers have been charging GH¢12.00 to GH¢14.00 from Diaspora to Pent, Evandy, and TF environs because of what they consider as long distance

According to a release by the SRC Public Relations Officer dated, 15th February 2023, the percentage of reduction was agreed upon following engagements with Boakye-Lincoln SRC Led Administration and the leadership of the Taxi Unions

Following the negotiations and in consideration of the plight of drivers, students and the University community, the two stakeholders have resolved to reduce the existing transport fares by 20% which is equivalent to GH¢2.00. Hence, the new fare is GH¢8.00. The SRC PRO have said

SKO BUREAU Team commended the PRO and the SRC for a good work done. This morning, SKO BUREAU Team decided to hit the street to catch the excitement of the students concerning the new fare. We were also at the Achimota-Legon Co-operative Transport Society which is close to the Okponglo entrance of the University of Ghana. The leadership declined our video interview because of circumstances beyond their control but we had the interview anyway

The drivers categorically stated that they agreed on GH¢8.00 for short distances while the fare for long distances will remain the same. They further stated that, the conclusion of the matter is yet to be resolved and as such students should disregard the unofficial GH¢8 new fare

According to one the drivers, he has had a conference call today with the SRC Vice President, the Secretary, and the PRO concerning yesterday's presser and demand that the SRC comes out with another communique to refute the first

I personally took a taxi for a colleague lady from the Night Market to JQB. I gave the driver GH¢20.00 but he gave me a change of GH¢10.00. After confronting him, he said that, the taxi drivers pays the E-Card but the UBER, YANGO and the BOLT drivers does not. Then again, the taxis are not allowed to go to the areas of GCB Main Building, NB and NNB. Meanwhile the BOLT, etc drivers are fee to move on campus without any disturbances making them having more customers

Some students also have expressed their dissatifaction and disappointment with the claim of the SRC PRO and the inmaterial nature of the reduction of taxi fares on campus.

Drivers and commuters are advised to ensure the facilitation of the smooth implementation of the new agreement as soon as possible. Students are also advised to maintain a cordial relationship with the taxi drivers on campus

The UGSRC's effort in engaging the drivers to reduce taxi fares is in keeping with Romans 13:3, “Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval.”

I, therefore call on the University Management, the Pro Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Students Affairs, the Dean of Students Affairs, the SRC, and all stakeholders to make sure that the new fares agreed upon will be implemented soon
